Training – mandatory and specialist

Carers trained for safer, more confident care at home

Blue River Home Care invests in induction, mandatory training, supervision, refresher learning and specialist development so our carers can support people safely, respectfully and professionally.

Care training and staff development

Our approach

Training is part of care quality, not just a compliance exercise

Domiciliary care workers support people in their own homes, often when needs are changing and families are worried. The role can include personal care, medication prompts or administration where agreed, meal preparation, mobility support, companionship, monitoring wellbeing and reporting concerns.

Our carers receive practical training before working independently, followed by supervision, spot checks, refresher learning and additional training where the person’s needs require more specialist knowledge.

Mandatory training

Core training every care worker needs

These areas help carers work safely, understand their responsibilities and protect the people they support.

Induction and Care Certificate standards

New carers are introduced to their role, duty of care, person-centred support, privacy, dignity, equality, communication and professional boundaries.

Safeguarding adults and children

Carers learn how to recognise abuse, neglect, poor practice or exploitation, how to report concerns and how to promote people’s rights and wellbeing.

Moving and handling

Training covers safer mobility support, transfers, equipment awareness, risk reduction and following individual moving and handling plans.

Medication awareness and administration

Carers are trained to follow medication care plans, record accurately, understand prompts versus administration and escalate concerns or errors.

Infection prevention and control

Hand hygiene, PPE, cleaning routines, waste management and reducing infection risks in the home environment.

First aid and emergency response

Recognising urgent situations, responding to falls or sudden illness, contacting emergency services and reporting incidents promptly.

Communication and record keeping

Clear daily notes, professional communication with families and adapting communication for people with sensory, cognitive or language needs.

Nutrition, hydration and food hygiene

Supporting meals, fluids, safe food preparation, appetite changes and escalation when nutrition or hydration becomes a concern.

Specialist training

Additional training for more complex care needs

Some care packages require carers with extra knowledge, experience or competency checks. We match carers according to the assessed needs of the client.

Dementia care

Understanding memory loss, distress, routine, reassurance, communication style, nutrition, safety and supporting families with changing behaviour.

End-of-life and palliative support

Comfort, dignity, communication, recognising changes, working alongside health professionals and supporting families sensitively.

Diabetes awareness and insulin support

Understanding diabetic care plans, food and hydration considerations, warning signs and when to escalate concerns.

Epilepsy awareness and emergency medication

Recognising seizure activity, following agreed protocols and responding calmly to emergency situations.

PEG, gastrostomy and nutrition support

Specialist awareness and competency-led support where this is included in the person’s care plan.

Oxygen therapy, nebulisers and oral suction awareness

Understanding equipment boundaries, safe support tasks, documentation and escalation routes.

Stoma and continence care

Practical dignity-focused support, hygiene, skin observation, privacy and reporting changes.

Mental capacity and mental health awareness

Respecting choice, understanding consent, recognising distress and supporting emotional wellbeing.

Training continues after induction
